Private Thyroid & Neck Ultrasound Scan

No GP referral needed. CQC rated Good. Over 30 years' experience. Written report within 24 hours.

A thyroid & neck ultrasound shows the size and structure of the thyroid and salivary glands & can find nodules, cysts and areas of inflammation. It is also used to assess lumps and swollen lymph nodes in the neck.

Common reasons for this scan:

  • A visible or palpable lump in the neck

  • Suspected goitre or an enlarged thyroid

  • Thyroid nodules found on examination or another scan

  • Abnormal thyroid blood tests

  • Difficulty swallowing or a feeling of pressure in the neck

  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck

  • Dry mouth or foul taste or discomfort after eating

How to prepare:

No preparation is needed. Please remove necklaces and wear a top that leaves the neck clear.

What happens during the scan:

The scan usually takes around 20 minutes. You lie on your back with your chin lifted and the neck slightly extended. The sonographer assesses the glands and describes any nodules. A written report follows.

What ultrasound can and cannot show:

Ultrasound can describe how a nodule looks, but it cannot always say whether it is benign. If a nodule needs further assessment, we will explain what is recommended and advise you to discuss the next step with your doctor.

Price & Booking:

Single area scans start from £110 at our Lincoln and Nottingham clinics & £130 at our Cheltenham and Stratford Upon Avon clinics. Two areas are £199. Book online and choose the clinic and time that suit you, or call 07907 594411 if you would like to talk to us first.
