Private Shoulder Ultrasound Scan
No GP referral needed. CQC rated Good. Over 30 years' experience. Written report within 24 hours.
A shoulder ultrasound is a quick, radiation-free way to look at the tendons, bursa and joint around the shoulder. It is most often used to assess the rotator cuff, and because the scan is live, we can move your arm and see the tissues working as you move.
Common reasons for this scan:
-
Shoulder pain, weakness or a painful arc of movement
-
Suspected rotator cuff tear or tendinopathy
-
Calcific tendinitis
-
Bursitis or impingement symptoms
-
Biceps tendon problems
-
AC joint pain after a fall or injury
How to prepare:
No preparation is needed. Please wear a top that can be moved aside to expose the shoulder.
What happens during the scan:
The scan usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes. Gel is applied to the shoulder and the sonographer examines each structure in turn, asking you to move the arm into different positions. You will have a written report, and the sonographer will explain the main findings before you leave.
What ultrasound can and cannot show:
Ultrasound shows tendons, bursae and the surface of the joint very well. It is less able to assess deep cartilage or the labrum, and we will tell you if an MRI would be more suitable.
