No GP referral needed. CQC rated Good. Over 30 years' experience. Written report within 24 hours.
Wrist ultrasound looks at the tendons, ligaments, nerves and joint lining on the surface of the wrist. It is an excellent test for lumps and for pain on the thumb side or the back of the wrist.
Common reasons for this scan:
-
Ganglion cysts and other wrist lumps
-
De Quervain's tenosynovitis (thumb-side wrist pain)
-
Carpal tunnel symptoms, where the median nerve can be assessed
-
Tendon sheath swelling or tendon injury
-
Joint inflammation (synovitis)
-
Pain after a fall on an outstretched hand
How to prepare:
No preparation is needed. Please remove watches and bracelets.
What happens during the scan:
The scan usually takes around 20 minutes. Gel is applied to the wrist and the sonographer examines each area, often asking you to move your fingers so that the tendons can be seen gliding. A written report follows.
