Private Carotid Artery Ultrasound Scan

No GP referral needed. CQC rated Good. Over 30 years' experience. Written report within 24 hours.

The carotid arteries in the neck carry blood to the brain. A carotid ultrasound uses Doppler to measure blood flow and to look for plaque or narrowing in the vessel walls. We also measure the lining of the vessel, known as the intimal thickness. This provides an indication for the potential risk of cardiovascular disease. Also, by classifying different types of plaques, we can provide an indication for the potential risk of certain types of strokes and TIA’s. This scan is available at our Lincoln and Nottingham clinics only.

Common reasons for this scan:

  • Checking for narrowing or plaque in the neck arteries

  • A doctor has heard a murmur (bruit) over the neck artery

  • Strong family history of stroke or vascular disease

  • Multiple vascular risk factors, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes or smoking

  • Follow-up of a previously known narrowing

  • Dizziness or other symptoms where a vascular cause is being considered

How to prepare:

No preparation is needed. Please remove necklaces and wear a top that leaves the neck clear.

What happens during the scan:

The scan usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes. You lie on your back with your head turned slightly to each side. The sonographer measures the vessel walls and blood flow on both sides. A written report follows.

When to seek urgent help:

If you have sudden weakness or numbness, a drooping face, slurred speech, or sudden loss of vision, call 999 immediately. These symptoms need emergency care and not a booked scan.
