Elbow ultrasound is an effective way to assess the tendons, ligaments and soft tissues around the joint. It is commonly used for tennis elbow and golfer's elbow, and it can show fluid, tendon tears and nerve problems in real time.
Common reasons for this scan:
-
Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) or golfer's elbow (medial epicondylitis)
-
Pain at the back of the elbow or a swollen olecranon bursa
-
Suspected distal biceps or triceps tendon injury
-
Fluid in the joint after injury
-
Tingling in the little finger (ulnar nerve)
-
Lumps or swelling around the elbow
How to prepare:
No preparation is needed. Please wear a short-sleeved top or sleeves that roll up above the elbow.
What happens during the scan:
The scan usually takes around 20 minutes. Gel is applied and the sonographer examines the front, back and sides of the elbow. A written report follows.
