Private Hernia Ultrasound Scan

No GP referral needed. CQC rated Good. Over 30 years' experience. Written report within 24 hours.

A hernia ultrasound looks at the muscle wall of the groin or abdomen to see whether tissue is pushing through a weak spot. Because hernias often appear only when you strain, we may scan you lying down and standing, and ask you to cough or strain during the scan.

Common reasons for this scan:

  • A lump or bulge in the groin or lower abdomen

  • Suspected inguinal, femoral, umbilical or incisional hernia

  • A lump that appears when you cough, lift or strain

  • Groin pain in a sportsperson

  • Pain or a bulge near a previous surgical scar

  • Checking whether a lump is a hernia or something else

How to prepare:

No preparation is needed.

What happens during the scan:

The scan usually takes around 20 minutes. You may be scanned lying down, standing & straining. Please wear clothing that is easy to adjust. A written report follows.

When to seek urgent help:

A hernia that becomes hard, very painful or cannot be pushed back, especially with vomiting, is an emergency. Go to A&E rather than waiting for an appointment.

Price & Booking:

Single area scans start from £110 at our Lincoln and Nottingham clinics & £130 at our Cheltenham and Stratford Upon Avon clinics. Two areas are £199. Book online and choose the clinic and time that suit you, or call 07907 594411 if you would like to talk to us first.
