Private Ankle Ultrasound Scan

No GP referral needed. CQC rated Good. Over 30 years' experience. Written report within 24 hours.

The ligaments and tendons around the ankle lie close to the skin and are shown clearly on ultrasound. A scan can distinguish a simple sprain from a ligament tear or tendon injury, and show whether there is fluid in the joint.

Common reasons for this scan:

  • Ankle sprains that have not settled

  • Suspected ligament tear after a twisting injury

  • Peroneal tendon problems (pain behind the outer ankle bone)

  • Tibialis posterior tendon pain on the inner side

  • Swelling, fluid or a lump around the ankle

  • Persistent pain after an injury when an X-ray was normal

How to prepare:

No preparation is needed. Please wear loose clothing and footwear that is easy to remove.

What happens during the scan:

The scan usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes. The sonographer scans the ligaments and tendons while gently moving the ankle, so that they can be seen under tension. A written report follows.

What ultrasound can and cannot show

Ultrasound does not show the bones in detail or the deep structures of the joint. If a fracture is suspected, an X-ray is the right first test, and we will advise you if an MRI would be more suitable.

Price & Booking:

A single area scan is £110 in Lincoln & Nottingham and £130 in Cheltenham & Stratford upon Avon. Two areas are £199. Book online and choose the clinic and time that suit you, or call 07907 594411 if you would like to talk to us first.
