Private Achilles Tendon Ultrasound Scan

No GP referral needed. CQC rated Good. Over 30 years' experience. Written report within 24 hours.

The Achilles tendon is the thick tendon at the back of the ankle. Ultrasound shows its structure clearly and can tell tendinopathy (thickening and degeneration) from a partial or complete tear. It can also check the bursa and the point where the tendon joins the heel.

Common reasons for this scan:

  • Pain or stiffness in the Achilles, especially first thing in the morning

  • Thickening or a lump in the tendon

  • Suspected partial or complete rupture

  • Pain at the back of the heel (insertional Achilles problems)

  • Retrocalcaneal bursitis

  • Runners and sportspeople with a persistent Achilles problem

How to prepare:

No preparation is needed. Please wear loose clothing that allows the lower leg and ankle to be examined.

What happens during the scan:

The scan usually takes around 15 to 20 minutes. You lie face down with the foot hanging over the end of the couch. The sonographer scans the full length of the tendon and may flex the ankle to see the tendon under tension. A written report follows.

What ultrasound can and cannot show

Ultrasound shows the tendon in detail, but it cannot show bone marrow changes or deeper joint problems. We will advise you if an MRI is more suitable.

Price & Booking:

A single area scan is £110 in Lincoln & Nottingham and £130 in Cheltenham & Stratford upon Avon. Two areas are £199. Book online and choose the clinic and time that suit you, or call 07907 594411 if you would like to talk to us first.
