Private Abdomen Ultrasound Scan

No GP referral needed. CQC rated Good. Over 30 years' experience. Written report within 24 hours.

An abdomen ultrasound looks at the upper abdominal organs: the liver, gallbladder and bile ducts, pancreas, spleen, kidneys and the main abdominal blood vessel (aorta). It is a safe, painless test with no radiation.

Common reasons for this scan:

  • Upper abdominal pain or bloating

  • Suspected gallstones

  • Abnormal liver blood tests or suspected fatty liver

  • Indigestion or symptoms that have not settled

  • Checking the kidneys and the aorta

  • Follow-up of a previous abnormal scan

How to prepare:

Please do not eat for 4 hours before your appointment, as food in the stomach can obscure the view. Small sips of water are fine, and you should take any regular medication as normal.

What happens during the scan:

The scan usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes. You lie on your back and gel is applied to the abdomen. You may be asked to hold your breath briefly or to turn onto your side. A written report follows.

When to seek urgent help:

Severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a rigid abdomen or black stools need urgent medical attention. Please do not wait for a booked scan.

Price & Booking:

Single area scans start from £110 at our Lincoln and Nottingham clinics & £130 at our Cheltenham and Stratford Upon Avon clinics. Two areas are £199. Book online and choose the clinic and time that suit you, or call 07907 594411 if you would like to talk to us first.
