Do I Need a GP Referral for a Private Ultrasound Scan?

One of the most common questions we're asked is whether you need a referral from your GP before booking a private ultrasound scan. The short answer is no — at LCL Ultrasound you can refer yourself and book directly, without seeing a doctor first.

What is self-referral?

Self-referral simply means you arrange the scan yourself, rather than waiting for a GP or consultant to organise it for you. You choose the scan you need, book an appointment online, and attend the clinic. Before you arrive for your scan, we will check the reason(s) why you requested it. This is to ensure an ultrasound is the most appropriate exam for you. If we think ultrasound is not right, we will contact you to explain why.

One of the main reasons people choose to go private is to remove the wait for a GP appointment, and then the further wait on an NHS imaging list, which can run to many weeks or months depending on the scan and your area.

When a scan might still involve your GP

Although you don't need a referral to book, there are times when involving your GP is sensible. If your scan finds something that needs follow-up or treatment, we can send your written report to your GP so they can arrange next steps. Many patients bring their private scan results to their GP precisely to speed up onward referral.
